Spatial conditions and equipment

Spatial conditions of the Institute of Geography

Within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Institute of Geography has a suitable space consisting of 2 amphitheaters, 4 classrooms, 6 laboratories (for cartography, geology, geomorphology, climatology and hydrology, socio-economic geography, and a computer lab), 19 cabinets, 1 library and other auxiliary rooms with a total area of over 1,200 m². In the amphitheaters, classrooms, and laboratories the basic function of the teaching process is performed, both in terms of direct teaching and in terms of the use of the rooms and equipment for scientific research and application work.

Technical equipment of the Institute of Geography

In accordance with its development, the Institute of Geography also has appropriate technical equipment. The classrooms are equipped with visual equipment (video beams, graphoscopes, and various other equipment). The institute owns several laboratories, including a computer laboratory with about 20 personal computers, however, due to various social and organizational developments, the pace of maintenance and renewal of the hardware and software equipment is considered to be unsatisfactory. With the new information technologies, communication via the Internet has been established, so that the foundations for more modern work have been created. However, this plan must be worked on constantly, in order for the technical equipment to always be at a highest level possible and thus to be maintained.

In the first decade of the 21st century, specific laboratories were formed and properly supplied with modern equipment and apparatus for various teaching and training activities and scientific research and application work. All offices have appropriate equipment for the individual work of employees, which creates conditions for permanent modernization of teaching at the institute. However, the maintenance and renewal of the equipment must always be at a high level.

The Institute of Geography is properly organized for conducting field classes of any kind where students are able to see various objects, phenomena, and processes that are the subject of study in geography.

The Institute of Geography has a large collection of nearly 7,000 hardcopy maps, which are used for teaching, as well as for certain scientific needs. There are several sets of wall maps with different content and spatial scope areas, which include special thematic maps. In addition, the Institute has several collections of topographic maps on different scales, which cover the territory of the Republic of Macedonia.

Within the Institute of Geography, there is also a more extensive mineralogical, petrographic, and collection of numerous fossil finds from different geological periods.

Although the computer equipment of the Institute is established, the renewal and maintenance of the level of functionality have to be of vital importance. Using the computers, the daily work of the employees, precise technical work in the process of the cartographic technology, and in the sphere of the publishing activity is made possible. The Institute of Geography also works on the latest technologies known as GIS - geographic information systems. Since a significant part of the teaching is carried out in the field, the Institute of Geography has numerous smaller pieces of equipment that are available in the teaching processes.
